The truth about Straits Times

Dear Mr Leonard Lim,

This is with regards to the article "Fresh Spat" you wrote and which appeared in The Straits Times on Wednesday, 26 May 2010. In it, there are several statements you made which are completely untrue and without basis.

First, the heading 'Wings-SAA in another showdown over sprinters' seems to suggest that Wings Athletic Club (WAC) and SAA have had of some sort of a new disagreement and conflict concerning the sprinters. I must state that the WAC Management Committee has had no knowledge of this 'showdown' until we read your article. We at WAC have had no communication whatsoever with and from SAA regarding the matter.

Secondly, your statement in Para 3 that 'But their club, Wings Athletic Club, decided to enter them in another meet .....' seems to suggest that we at WAC are purposely opposing and going against the national 4 X 100m Squad setup. We at WAC would like to state categorically that we DID NOT enter them for the upcoming Taiwan Open.

Thirdly, in Para 4, the statement 'This was done without prior approval of the Singapore Athletic Association (SAA), a move which breaches international protocol.' seems to imply that WAC has broken some SAA rules and that of an international governing body. Since we did not enter the said athletes for the Taiwan Open, the WAC management committee was definitely not in need of seeking 'prior approval' from SAA, and we definitely did not make any 'move which breaches international protocol'.

Para 5 saying that '.... Melvin Tan, who is Wings' president.' is factually wrong. He has stepped down as WAC president since April 2010.

For Para 6 in the article, please research IAAF rules to see if that's true.

The above-mentioned article has put Wings Athletic Club in a bad light, which can potentially tarnish the club's image in the eyes of both the Track & Field and sports fratenity in general, as well as in the eyes of the general public.

Therefore, the WAC Management Committee would like to request that you investigate the matter thoroughly and expeditiously, and present the facts of the case accurately in a new report in The Straits Times.

We at WAC sincerely hope that you will assist us in clearing our club's name and restoring any damage to our club's image as regards the above matter. Thank you.
